Chaney Enterprises Donation Completes Park Benches
Last month, Chaney Enterprises donated four tons
of RC6 Recycled Concrete, plus tax and hauling
expenses, for the bases around six benches recently
built along trails at Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary
in Upper Marlboro. Eric Patten, Jr. of Boy Scout
Troop 1780 requested the donation and built the
benches as part of his Eagle Scout project on May
10.
The Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary consists of nearly
2,000 acres of marshland, fields, and ponds and
houses up to 20,000 Canada geese during the winter
months. It sits adjacent to the Jug Bay Natural
Area and was established to reintroduce the Canada
Goose to Maryland’s Western Shore, but also
offers habitat to other birds and mammals. Currently,
Merkle offers four hiking paths, a driving tour
and several educational exhibits for its visitors.
Chaney Enterprises recognizes the value of such
sanctuaries that work to protect our Chesapeake
Bay Watershed and that offer tangible benefits
to the general public, and therefore seeks to aid
those who desire to improve them. The benches had
been on Merkle’s “wish list,” but
the park had not yet been able to do the project
on its own; according to Penny Finotti, Volunteer
Coordinator for Merkle, the benches have already
received much use and many praises.
Chaney Enterprises is a construction materials
supplier located in Upper Marlboro and is committed
to the environment and those who protect it. In
fact, part of Chaney’s Mission Statement
is to, “realize a reasonable return while
continuing our ongoing commitment to our environment
and our community.” Putting this into action
means not only supporting projects such as Patten’s,
but also reclaiming used mining sites and returning
them to usable condition. Former mineral reserve
and mining sites now constitute more than 50 acres
of baseball, softball and football fields in Southern
Maryland, five and one half acres donated toward
former Governor Glendening’s goal of 60,000
acres of wetlands, a golf course in Davidsonville,
and local farmland.
While the company emphasizes Outstanding People,
Quality Products and Superior Service, it also
focuses on what it believes to be its duty to help
provide a better quality of life for the communities
in which it does business. The company recognizes
its responsibility as a corporate citizen partially
through its motto, “Neighbors Serving Neighbors,” and
annually sets aside six percent of their net revenue
for philanthropic causes.
In business since 1962, Chaney Enterprises is
a leading supplier of concrete, concrete block,
construction materials and supplies, and sand,
gravel and stone. The company operates seven ready
mix concrete plants and four sand and gravel facilities
throughout the State of Maryland, as well as a
19,000-square-foot contractor-grade construction
materials supply store. It proudly serves Anne
Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Charles, Prince Georges,
Montgomery, and St. Mary’s Counties.
Chaney Enterprises congratulates Eric Patten,
Jr. on his accomplishment of attaining the rank
of Eagle Scout and hopes the staff and visitors
of Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary enjoy the benches
for years to come.
