Figure 1 - MII emphasizes society’s reliance
on natural resources
The Mineral Information Institute recognized Chaney
Enterprises’ efforts to promote Natural Resource
Literacy in America in their 2002-2003 National
Education Sponsor Award. The award acknowledges
the steps Chaney Enterprises has made toward creating
a public awareness and understanding that our mineral
resources are essential to society and produced
in an environmentally and socially responsible
manner.
The Mineral Information Institute (MII) is a
non-profit organization dedicated to educating
youth about the importance of our mineral and other
natural resources. It works with various government,
industry, and educational agencies to distribute
free supplemental classroom material to more than
29,000 teachers of all grades.
Faced with the fact that society relies heavily
on natural resources, as illustrated by the figure
above, MII’s end goal is to ensure the wise
development of natural resources through education
of the public and heightened awareness. The MII
is supported entirely by donation.
Chaney Enterprises, a construction materials supplier
based out of Waldorf, MD, is proud to help MII
in its mission to support mineral education in
the classroom. In fact, part of Chaney Enterprises’ Mission
Statement is to “realize a reasonable return
while continuing our ongoing commitment to our
environment and our community.” The company
understands how heavily the construction industry
and society at large rely on minerals and thus
endeavors to use them wisely.
In its commitment to the environment, Chaney Enterprises
not only supports organizations like the MII in
their efforts to educate, but also leads its own
industry by example. The company employs a policy
to “fix it up” if they’ve “dug
it up.” This means that any land previously
used for mining will be returned to a usable state
once the mining has been completed to ensure its
enjoyment by future generations. Land that Chaney
Enterprises has reclaimed includes several athletic
fields in Southern Maryland, a golf course, the
site of a local hospital, the wetlands off of Route
5, and local farmland.
The MII’s land reclamation page on its website
(www.mii.org) emphasizes that mining does not destroy
the future usability of the land, but rather, land
that has been mined can make important contributions
to the ecosystem. In fact, it says, reclaimed mine
sites are often more attractive for human and wildlife
uses than before the mining began.
Not only does Chaney Enterprises emphasize Quality
Products, Outstanding People, and Superior Service,
it is also dedicated to being a responsible corporate
citizen. The company sets aside six percent of
its annual net revenue for distribution to philanthropic
causes within the community. Chaney Enterprises
believes its duty is to help provide a better quality
of life for the communities in which it does business.
In business since 1962, Chaney Enterprises is
a leading supplier of concrete, concrete block,
construction materials and supplies, and sand,
gravel and stone. The company operates seven ready
mix concrete plants and four sand and gravel facilities
throughout the State of Maryland, as well as a
19,000-square-foot contractor-grade construction
materials supply store. Chaney Enterprises is your
One Stop ShopTM for construction materials and
supplies, proudly serving Anne Arundel, Baltimore,
Calvert, Charles, Prince Georges, Montgomery, and
St. Mary’s Counties.
Chaney Enterprises is pleased to be recognized
by the Mineral Information Institute and is committed
to continuing its efforts to protect the environment
and our natural resources. If you are interested
