Chaney Enterprises’ Beautification
Grant To
Enhance Local Curb-Side Appeal
Fourteen County schools and organizations recently
received a total of more than $12,000 from The
Chaney Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Chaney
Enterprises, to improve their grounds. The new
Beautification Grant was implemented by Chaney
Enterprises to build upon its mission to be a responsible
corporate citizen and to give back to the community.
The application for the grant was offered to sixteen
separate entities within Charles County; fourteen
were selected based upon the stated purpose of
the project and aesthetic need.
The recipients of the Beautification Grant are:
Malcolm Elementary School, Mary H. Matula Elementary
School, Benjamin Stoddert Middle School, John Hanson
Middle School, Mattawoman Middle School, Matthew
Henson Middle School PTO, Maurice J. McDonough
PTSO, Charles County Public Schools, Clarks Run
Citizens Association, Charles County Beautification
Program, Charles County Garden Club, La Plata Community
Garden Club, Melwood Horticultural Training Center,
and Nanjemoy Vision – Recreation Committee.
Among projects proposed were several schools that
will use the money to redesign gardens and entryways
and to create areas for instructional uses. Other
projects, such as those proposed by the Charles
County Garden Club and Clarks Run Citizens Association,
are to repair damage caused by last year’s
tornado, while Melwood Horticultural Training Center
will enhance the entrance to Will’s Park
in La Plata. Melwood was the only recipient to
request money to do work on someone else’s
grounds. “We value all of these projects,
but are particularly struck by the community spirit
Melwood embodies, as displayed by their concern
for the public park,” said Carol Jackson,
Grant Administrator and a member of the Chaney
Foundation Board.
Applicants were permitted to request up to $1,000
each, but in order to be eligible for the grant,
they had to show proof of their ability to match
the amount requested in the form of cash, labor
or materials. The applicants’ match will
contribute to the completion of their beautification
plans.
Though the beautification grant is new this year
and was offered only to Charles County residents,
The Chaney Foundation hopes next year to expand
the opportunity to schools and organizations outside
of the county.
Chaney Enterprises is Your One Stop ShopTM construction
materials supplier based out of Waldorf and emphasizes
quality service to its customers, but also focuses
on helping to provide a better quality of life
for the communities in which it does business.
The company recognizes its responsibility as a
corporate citizen partially through its motto, “Neighbors
Serving Neighbors,” but takes positive action
toward this objective through the Chaney Foundation.
“The Chaney Foundation is our commitment
to the communities in which Chaney Enterprises’ does
business and in which their employees live, so
that we can help provide a better quality of life.
Chaney Enterprises does this by giving six percent
of their net profit to the foundation to be distributed
to worthy organizations,” said Jessica Gallimore,
Marketing Manager for Chaney Enterprises.
This theme of reaching out and being an asset
to the community comes from the executive management
team, but also permeates the entire company via
the mission statement, which reads in part, “Chaney
Enterprises mission is to … realize a reasonable
return while continuing our ongoing commitment
to our environment and our community.”
Furthermore, Chaney Enterprises is committed to
the environment and employs a policy to
”
fix it up” if they’ve “dug it
up.” The company’s land reclamation
projects ensure that every area mined by the company
is returned to a usable state for the enjoyment
of future generations. Former mineral reserve and
mining sites that have been restored now constitute
the wetlands on Route 5, various soccer fields,
a golf course in Davidsonville, and local farmland.
In business since 1962, Chaney Enterprises is
a leading supplier of concrete, concrete block,
construction materials and supplies, and sand,
gravel and stone. The company operates seven ready
mix concrete plants and four sand and gravel facilities
throughout the State of Maryland, as well as a
19,000-square-foot contractor-grade construction
materials supply store. It proudly serves Anne
Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Charles, Prince Georges,
Montgomery, and St. Mary’s Counties.
The Chaney Foundation would like to thank all
its applicants and wishes the best to these groups
as they complete their beautification projects
in the Charles County area.
